Liverpool have been away from Europe's top competition since the 2009-2010 season but have made an excellent start to their Barclays Premier League campaign.
Powered by the goals of deadly strike partnership Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, they sat second entering the international break, behind Arsenal only on goals scored.

the Premier League this season

But captain Gerrard, who has also been leading England in their crucial World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland this week, believes a top four finish is the best Brendan Rodgers' team can do.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: 'I'd never say never about our chances of winning the Premier League title.
'But if I'm honest, that's not the aim. The aim is for a top-four place - and to finish above Everton.'
Sturridge has scored eight goals for Liverpool in all competitions this season, while Suarez has three since returning from his 10-match suspension, as the Anfield side push on towards the summit.
They return to action at Newcastle United on Saturday and face Arsenal and Everton in November.
Gerrard could have won the Premier League title - and played regularly in the Champions League - if he had joined Chelsea in 2005.
But the midfield general says he has no regrets about staying loyal to his boyhood club.

He said: 'I am the captain of my boyhood team. I have a special relationship with staff and supporters. There is a bond there.
'I've never made decisions financially. I make them with my heart - and that's why I haven't moved on.'
