The 22-year-old's strike came at a crucial time for England, with Montenegro looking dangerous after pulling a goal back to make the score 2-1.
Townsend has played 27 times for Spurs but has only scored four goals and the winger revealed his strike-rate has come under fire from Defoe and Walker.

'JD (Jermain Defoe) and Kyle (Walker) have been giving me a bit of stick (about not scoring), so it's nice to keep them quiet for a while!,' Townsend said.
'I tried to play my normal game and everything went well. The most important thing was the win, it was a huge game.
The Spurs man was delighted to scored for his country on his debut and is already looking ahead to Tuesday's qualifier against Poland at Wembley.
'I'm so proud to have represented my country and to play well and score really is a dream come true,' he added.
'It hasn't really sunk in yet. All I'm thinking about is Poland on Tuesday and then it's back to Spurs and preparing for Villa.'
England require victory over the Poles to reach next summer's World Cup in Brazil.
