Undaunted by Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick on Tuesday night,
Lionel Messi, who we should remember is still only 26, grabbed one of
his own on Wednesday night. It was the Argentine's 24th treble for
Barcelona and has put him just nine goals behind Raul's Champions League
record.

struggled to recover from a career threatening injury, but they're not
complaining anymore, reports Simon Cass.

Ahead of the Manchester derby, most players in the separate
camps will be mentally preparing themselves for one of the biggest games
of the season.
Not Sergio Aguero, though. The Argentinian caught up with multiple Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, to gain some valuable speed tips before Sunday's match at the Etihad stadium.
Bolt, a Manchester United fan through and through, also played some football with the striker, and admitted he was trying to wear out one of City's most influential players.

Mesut Ozil may be Arsenal's record signing but French
newspaper L'Equipe was left distinctly unimpressed by his performance in
the 2-1 Champions League win over Marseille.
L'Equipe's Jean-Michel Rouet harshly awarded the midfielder a four for his display at the Stade Velodrome, with Jack Wilshere also given the same mark.

Gibson available for Republic of Ireland again after Trapattoni departs
Sad indictment of Giovanni Trapattoni and his era that Darron
Gibson has made himself available for the Republic of Ireland again
following the Italian manager’s departure last week?
Or sad indictment on Gibson?
The Everton midfielder’s big sulk is over after he did not play a minute in the disastrous Euro 2012 finals and refused to play for Trapattoni in the World Cup campaign – despite insistence from assistant Marco Tardelli that he would.
Mind you, if I’d been Gibson in Poland I’d have been a bit miffed too. Striker Simon Cox got a start to assist poor Keith Andrews and Glenn Whelan in that over-run midfield against Spain, and then Paul Green, a late addition to the Ireland squad, got a run as a sub.

Sportsmail's Colin Young reports: 'Decisions, decisions for Steve Bruce this week.
'Striker Yannick Sagbo is back after a three-match ban and is likely to face Newcastle United this weekend.
'Danny Graham has yet to score for the Tigers (or anyone since January) despite his best efforts and Bruce was critical of German Nick Proschwitz earlier this month. He did score a hat-trick for the reserves this week, however.
'Egypt international Gedo has finally arrived in Hull and has started his fitness training ahead of his long-awaited return to Hull colours.
'Bruce meets the press his afternoon and the issue of his strikers options for his goal-shy side is certain to be discussed.
'There might be a mention too for Steve Harper although Hull’s veteran former Newcastle keeper is unlikely to play on his first return to St James’ Park on Saturday.'

Allardyce admits West Ham failed in Lukaku pursuit - full story to follow
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has admitted that the club tried 'all summer' to lure Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku on loan.
The Belgian eventually joined Everton on deadline day and he is likely to make his Toffees debut against West Ham at Upton Park on Saturday.
Allardyce said: 'We chased him all summer to be honest. When it came the final day of the deadline we missed out and Everton secured his loan deal. We were told he was more or less going back to West Brom but that changed.'

Sportsmail's Riath Al-Samarrai is with Swansea City in Valencia ahead of their Europa League opener at the Mestalla.
He reports: 'Lovely morning in Valencia. It's already up around the 24 degree mark and is expected to be around the same when Swansea kick off their Group A campaign later. It's fair to say Swansea fans have taken over the old town. One couple - or rather that's one couple I saw - were serenaded with a chant of 'You Jack b******s' as they took a stroll. They didn't seem to mind so much. My night was dominated by a monumental lecture over dinner from former Wales winger Leighton James about the merits of wide men and why this dying breed is missed. He's passionate on the subject.'

David Ginola has warned Newcastle that having so many French players has the potential to cause tension at the club, reports Sam Cunningham.
Ginola was the only French player in Newcastle’s squad when he joined them in 1995 from Paris St-Germain. That forced him to learn the language and throw himself into the culture, and he is fondly remembered in the city for his two years there.
Now more than a third of the squad – 12 of the 33 players – are French and Ginola believes having such a large contingent from the same country can cause problems.
